Equissage California -Certification Program

In Demand as a Career Choice for Horse Care Professionals.

As we have turned to alternative therapies for healing ourselves, we have recognized powerful benefits for our animals. As a result, Equine Sports Massage Therapy has become an alternative therapy of choice at racetracks, top show barns, The Olympics, and even The Royal horses of Dubai and of course the everyday horse owner. Our horses are athletes and like their human counterparts, they can dramatically benefit from regular sports massage therapy. Some of the many benefits include, increasing range of motion, lengthening stride, improving circulation which promotes healing, reducing the risk of injury, easing muscle spasms and pain, and improving the horse's disposition and attitude.

Like us, they too get grumpy when they are in pain. So often, we turn for the harsher bit, additional training or spurs or whips to solve many of our horse's issues. Sometimes, we even give up and replace an uncooperative horse. If we would just start listening to our horses we would understand that they are just trying to tell us something. If something hurts, how many ways does a horse have to tell us? Well, they can buck, rear, toss their head, pin their ears, swish their tail, become stiff and resistant, hollow their backs, refuse leads just to name a few. Many of these and other issues can improve quickly and inexpensively with the trained hands of an Equissage Graduate. This is a powerful modality used to reduce the risk of injury in athletes as well as to enhance their recovery after an injury. More and more, the demand for qualified Certified Equine Sports Massage Therapists is increasing on the West Coast.

Equissage California is a highly reputable school that trains and certifies people who want to begin a career helping and healing horses. Equissage has been recognized as one of the top schools in its field by many veterinarians, practical horseman magazine, stable management magazine, dressage today, sports illustrated and many more. The course consists of lots of hands on training as well as necessary class room time. The certification course consists of 5 intense days where students will learn all aspects of sports massage including basic anatomy and physiology of the equine muscular system. Students will learn to identify and correct muscular problems which can be relieved by sports massage. Also addressed are some specific conditions which may affect horses when muscles become strained, pulled, tired, sore or not adequately nourished through proper circulation. The prominent emphasis of the course is the application of massage techniques, including massage strokes and the Equissage sequence. There is also an advanced 3 day class that is optional which will consist of case studies in the field as well as a deeper look at all aspects of the work and the business side of things. The courses are taught in Valley Center, Ca. at our Equissage Facility with occasional field trips to local equine rescues or therapeutic riding centers.

In addition to the healthcare aspects of the massage therapy career, the Equissage course also includes business topics such as marketing, proper business practices, price setting and identifying goals for the developing practice. Graduates of the certification program can grow their practice toward whatever aspirations they have. Since 1992, more than 10,000 Sports Massage Therapists have graduated from Equissage, from all over the globe - throughout the United States and 19 different countries. Many graduates work for the very top echelon of the equestrian world - in the racing industry, show circuits and even the Olympics. Those who strive to build a larger, prominent business will certainly have the basis in place, and each graduate's own motivation can drive their business into a lucrative practice. Others may have more altruistic motivations, such as helping equine rehabilitation facilities or rescue operations. Still others may choose to become a Certified Equissage Sports Massage Therapist because they can be their own boss, set their own hours and build any level of clientele they choose.

Equissage is one of only a few equine massage schools worldwide that is approved by The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a continuing education approved provider . This allows licensed massage therapists to receive 50 hours of continuing education credits for taking this course. Equissage was founded in 1989 and the original school still stands in Round Hill Virginia. They have brought this same, powerful curriculum to us on the West Coast with Equissage California located in North San Diego County.

If you are looking for a qualified ESMT in your area you can look at their graduate directory at the bottom of their home page or contact them directly.

The Worthy Horse Equine Bodywork
Susie Huber-Lytal, MS, CESMT, LMT

Bringing Science and Intuition together for a balanced approach to healing, certified in 1995, and is trained in a variety of modalities including equine skeletal balancing, sports massage, therapeutic massage, stretching and saddle fit analysis. Susie's approach to bodywork is based upon a fundamental understanding of how the horse interacts with its environment and task requirements.  Biomechanical analysis provides the foundation of skeletal balancing, where mechanical restrictions that lead to muscular compensations are identified and alleviated, bringing the body back to balance and normal function is restored or maintained. Please look into the current clinic schedule for information on how you can learn to help your horse and identify physical problems before they result in injury.

Kellogg Equestrian Academy

Sue Kellogg

Kellogg Equestrian Academy (KEA), located at the beautiful Coto de Caza Equestrian Center, is no ordinary riding lesson program!  Professional Trainer and Riding Instructor Sue Kellogg-Graf has formed a niche in giving personalized riding instruction, horsemanship education and rider fitness through her experience in training, Equestrian Plates and equine massage.   For over 20 years, Sue has worked with students of all levels/disciplines who all have one thing in common: they are passionate about horses!  Sue is a certified Pilates Mat & Equestrian Pilates Instructor, and has seen this cross-training transform students into secure and sensitive riders.  In a small barn atmosphere, personalized attention to riders and horses is the hallmark of Sue's program.  Riding instruction, horse care and healthcare are tailored to each student's unique needs and goals. Most recently Sue became certified in equine massage through Equinology - an intensive equine bodywork school.  Safety is key with identifying achievable goals for the riders, so that they will move to the next level and progress only when they have mastered the basics and foundation work.  Her Equestrian Pilates workshops /clinics benefit riders from all disciplines as well - specific exercises help riders "train" their natural aids to work independently, thus improving communication when riding their horse.  Sue's Equestrian Pilates sessions will help riders sit the trot better, develop a stronger seat and reduce back pain.  Wellness also translates to the horses at KEA, where Sue has assembled a talented network of equine healthcare professionals to ensure the excellent well being for the horses.  If you have an "undeniable thirst" for all things equine, KEA is the place for you!  For more information about our training, Equestrian Pilates workshops or clinics, or equine massage, please visit our website.
